Description

The Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception were founded in Montreal in 1902 by Delia Tetreault (Mother of the Holy Spirit), and opened their first foreign mission in China in 1909. Shortly after, the foundress started to provide services for Chinese immigrants in Montreal (1918) and Vancouver (1921). Who knows today that the Montreal Chinese Hospital, a modern building with 128 beds, had very humble beginnings when Delia Tetreault opened a small shelter for sick Chinese men during the influenza epidemic? In 1921, she sent four M.I.C. sisters to start education and health services for the Chinese population of Vancouver. Today, Mount Saint Joseph is a modern 275-bed hospital serving the multiethnic population of British Columbia. This note offers a narrative history of these two hospitals, with both their lighter and darker moments. Now under lay administration, they continue their mission of caring in the spirit of their founders, the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception.
